TCF Canada training: the resources to prepare with in 2026
The most effective TCF Canada preparation combines the free official resources, regular writing and speaking practice with feedback, and, if your budget allows, a tutored course. Here is what each type of resource gives you, what it costs and the traps to avoid.
Updated October 19, 2026
1. Free official resources
They are the only ones guaranteed to match the format. Start with them.
- France Éducation international (the body behind the TCF): the presentation of the four tests, sample questions, a writing sample test, the marking criteria and the level grids.
- TV5Monde: practice exercises for the mandatory TCF tests, recommended by France Éducation international.
- RFI, « Le français facile »: listening practice, also recommended by France Éducation international.
- For TEF Canada: CCI Paris Île-de-France publishes sample tests for all four skills, practice tutorials and video workshops (see our TEF Canada page).
Their limit: they do not correct your own writing or speaking.
2. AI writing correction
Online graders fill that gap for writing: you submit a text in the exam format and get an estimate of your level, the list of your mistakes and ways to improve, in seconds. That is what TCF Canada Coach does for TCF Canada and TEF Canada:
- estimated NCLC and CEFR level, word-count check with the official rule;
- explained sentence-by-sentence corrections, a score for each criterion, a model answer on the same prompt;
- free preview (level and 2 corrections), full reports from US$9.90 for 10 corrections, no subscription;
- a timed writing practice test and original prompts.
Worth knowing: AI gives an estimate, not an official score, and it assesses one task at a time while the official grader scores the whole test. Use it to spot recurring mistakes and follow a trend across several texts.
3. Tutored courses
Test centres, Alliances françaises and language schools often run TCF Canada preparation, in groups or one to one, usually paid. Before signing up, check that:
- the programme follows the current format of the four tests (number of questions, tasks, timing);
- you will get personalised corrections in writing and speaking simulations;
- a full, timed practice test is planned before your test date.
4. Practice books
A practice book lets you work offline with full tests. Pick a recent edition that matches the current format; for TEF, CCI Paris Île-de-France itself lists a practice book published by Hachette FLE. A book will not correct your texts, so pair it with some form of correction.
5. Traps to avoid
- “Sujets d’actualité” and texts to learn by heart. France Éducation international’s rules list plagiarism as fraud, including reproducing an existing document you memorised. Possible penalties: cancelled results, a ban on taking the exam for several years, even prosecution in serious cases.
- Guaranteed-score promises. Only France Éducation international and CCI Paris Île-de-France issue results.
- Outdated information. TEF Canada has been scored out of 699 since 11 December 2023, and TCF re-mark requests have been suspended since the 1 September 2026 sessions: a resource that misses this is not up to date.
6. How to choose for your situation
| Your situation | What works | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| No budget | Official resources (France Éducation international, TV5Monde, RFI) + original prompts + free correction preview | You self-correct, with a checklist |
| You need feedback on writing | AI correction (level estimate, every mistake, model answer) or a tutor | AI gives an estimate, not an official score |
| You need speaking practice | Language exchange, group class or private tutor | Nothing replaces a real conversation partner |
| Little time before the exam | Timed practice tests + a list of your recurring mistakes | Go for easy points: instructions, word count, timing |
To plan it over time, follow our 4-week preparation plan and see the options for free correction.
FAQ
Is there free TCF Canada training?
There is no free official course, but you can prepare largely for free: France Éducation international publishes the test presentation and sample questions, and recommends the TV5Monde and RFI exercises. For writing, our original prompts, practice test and correction preview are free.
How much does TCF Canada preparation cost?
Anywhere from nothing (official resources) to paid courses, whose fees depend on the centre or school. Online correction tools sit in between: our full reports start at US$9.90 for 10 corrections, with no subscription.
Should I memorise model answers or “sujets d’actualité”?
No. France Éducation international’s rules list plagiarism as fraud, including reproducing an existing text you learned by heart. Penalties range from cancelled results to a ban on retaking the exam for several years. Practise on original prompts and learn structures, not texts.
What is the best way to improve my writing?
Write regularly in the exam format and get every text corrected: feedback is what makes you progress, not the number of model answers you read. Keep a list of your recurring mistakes and work on them from one text to the next.
