How much does the TEF Canada cost? Test centre fees in 2026

There is no single fee: according to CCI Paris Île-de-France, which designs the test, registration fees are set by each centre and vary from one centre to another and with the number of tests. We read the fees on the centres’ websites on 1 November 2026: CA$390 for the four tests in Ottawa and Calgary, MAD 2,900 in Casablanca, NGN 750,000 in Lagos and BDT 26,000 in Dhaka.

Fee as shown on the centre’s TEF page on 1 November 2026, in its own currency, with no conversion. Fees change: the one that counts is the fee shown on the day you book.

These centres show no fee on their page: Alliance Française de Montréal, Alliance Française Vancouver, Alliance Française Dubai, Alliance française Sharjah and Alliance Française d’Islamabad. Ask the centre. For other countries, CCI Paris Île-de-France lists 500 official test centres in more than 110 countries: find yours with the “Trouver un centre” (find a centre) tool on its website, then open the centre’s TEF Canada page.

Four tests or two: the version you pay for

The fee also depends on the number of tests. Alliance Française Ottawa lists the two TEF Canada versions it offers:

  • Permanent residence: listening, reading, speaking and writing, in the same session. CA$390, that is CA$97.50 per test.
  • Citizenship: listening and speaking, in the same session. CA$195.

Alliance Française Calgary sells a “listening and speaking only” option for CA$240. Ottawa notes that this information is indicative and may change according to the Canadian immigration authorities: check on IRCC’s website which tests your application needs before you pay.

If you are exempted from one or more tests because of a disability, CCI says you pay only for the tests you actually take. Ask your centre for the arrangement before you register, with a medical certificate.

What the fee covers, and what it does not

  • Covered: the tests and the results certificate. According to CCI, results are sent within 1 to 10 working days from the test date, by email, with a link to an online digital safe where you download the certificate; there is no paper certificate. Results are valid for 2 years.
  • Delays the centres announce: within 6 weeks at Alliance Française Calgary (electronic version sent by CCI Paris), from 2 weeks after the exam in Sharjah (by email), 2 weeks for an e-TEF in Islamabad.
  • On a computer: at Alliance Française Ottawa, listening, reading and writing are taken on a computer.
  • Not covered: preparation. Alliance Française Dubai notes that you can register for exam preparation independently of registering for the exam.
  • Not covered: travel. Alliance Française de Montréal warns that candidates who register despite a long distance do so at their own risk.

Cancellation, absence, date changes: registration is firm

The CCI Paris Île-de-France rule: registration is firm and final, and the fees paid are not returned. If you miss the test without a valid reason, you are not refunded. With proof (a medical certificate, a letter from your employer…), CCI may offer a new registration at the centre at no extra cost. Centres add their own rules:

  • Alliance Française Ottawa: CA$100 non-refundable kept for a cancellation or date change before the registration deadline; after the deadline, no refund or change.
  • Alliance Française Calgary: no refund or deferral.
  • Alliance Française de Montréal: one change only, requested no later than 15 days before the exam; a non-refundable CA$75 is kept for a cancellation no later than 15 days before; after that, no refund or change.
  • Alliance Française de Dhaka: no refund or transfer to the next session.
  • Alliance Française Dubai: refund only if you cancel during the official registration period; after it, no refund or credit, including for absence.
  • Alliance française Sharjah: no refund or transfer once the registration period is over.

Booking the wrong test also costs a full fee: Alliance Française Ottawa sells other versions of the TEF, such as the TEFaQ, and Alliance Française de Montréal declines all responsibility for the candidate’s choice of exam. Make sure you book the TEF Canada.

Retaking the TEF Canada: every attempt costs the full fee

CCI requires a waiting period of 20 days between two sittings. Alliance Française Calgary and Alliance Française de Montréal apply the same rule, and Montreal gives no refund for a registration that breaks it. Some centres ask for more: at least 30 days between two registrations at Alliance Française Ottawa, 30 days at Alliance Française de Lagos.

Each sitting costs the full fee: in Ottawa or Calgary, two attempts come to CA$780. That is why it pays to know your level before you book. In writing, for a test taken since 11 December 2023, NCLC 7 starts at 428 out of 699 on the CCI chart; from 379 to 427 it is NCLC 6. The thresholds for every skill are in our NCLC score chart.

TEF Canada or TCF Canada: which costs less?

For both tests the centre sets the fee, and the gap is small where both are offered. At Alliance Française Calgary: CA$390 for the TEF Canada, CA$400 for the TCF Canada (fee checked on 22 October 2026). At Institut français in Casablanca: MAD 2,900 for either test. In Canada, the TCF centres that publish a fee charge CA$392 to CA$400: see TCF Canada fees by centre.
