TCF and TEF exam booking in Canada: how to register, fees and test centres

You book the TCF Canada or TEF Canada with an approved test centre, usually online when its registration opens. At the centres we read on 5 November 2026, the full test costs CA$390 to CA$420, and most TCF sessions were already sold out. The table below lists the sessions and windows each centre has published. We are not a test centre and cannot book for you.

Seat calendar: TCF and TEF sessions and registration windows

There is no national date: according to FEI, TCF Canada sessions run all year and each centre organises them as it can. This table lists what each centre’s own public page showed. Checked on 5 November 2026, around 1 am Vancouver time; the centre’s website prevails. Seats and status are as shown at that moment, and they can change within minutes.

A row leaves this table when its window closes, or two weeks after our check if the centre shows no window. Numbers in brackets are seats left at that moment.

The pages we read for Alliance Française Ottawa, Alliance Française de Montréal, UQAM and Collège Mathieu (sessions every month, dates in its registration form) show no list of sessions. We have not read the session lists of the other centres below: open their sites.

How far ahead centres open

From the windows on these pages, past and future, as read on 5 November 2026:

  • Alliance Française Vancouver: about a week, two to four months before the test.
  • Alliance Française Victoria: about two weeks, roughly two months before the test.
  • Alliance Française d’Edmonton: most TCF windows lasted about an hour, between 5 days and 5 weeks before the test; TEF windows lasted from a few hours to two days.
  • Alliance Française Toronto: fixed dates each quarter, at 10 am.

What the centres themselves advise

  • Alliance Française Victoria and Alliance Française Vancouver: log in to your account in advance and have your passport number ready before registration opens. Opening several tabs or refreshing again and again may cancel your reservation.
  • Alliance Française d’Edmonton: new dates go on its page as soon as they are available, and heavy traffic when they do may cause technical problems. Questions about dates get no individual reply, and you cannot book in person or by email.
  • Alliance Française Calgary: no button or “Sold Out” means no seats remain. A button can stay visible just after a session fills, so refresh the page. Do not call reception about seats.
  • Alliance Française Toronto: if a session is not listed, it is full. There is no waiting list, but spots sometimes open up, first come, first served. You can hold only one registration at a time.
  • Alliance Française Ottawa: if no date is available, check its site regularly; it gives no dates by email or phone.
  • Ashton Testing Services: its FAQ says new dates come out in the middle of each month, with no waiting list or mailing list.

TCF exam booking and TEF exam booking, step by step

  1. Choose the right test. Both are accepted by IRCC; see TCF vs TEF. Check the version as well: TCF Canada is not TCF Québec, and centres leave that choice to you: Alliance Française d’Edmonton says it is your responsibility.
  2. Find a centre. For the TCF, use France Éducation international’s list; the centres in Canada are below. For the TEF, use CCI Paris Île-de-France’s search tool. FEI tells you to contact the approved centre closest to your home. Book only with a listed centre: Alliance Française Vancouver warns that fake websites offer fraudulent certificates.
  3. Watch its registration period. Start with the seat calendar above. FEI and CCI do not publish a common calendar: the centre sets its dates and its fee. Alliance Française Calgary and Alliance Française d’Edmonton say their page is all they can tell you about dates.
  4. Book and pay. Have your passport number ready and log in before registration opens, as Alliance Française Vancouver advises. Do not open several tabs: its page warns this may cancel your reservation. The name you enter must match the ID you will bring.
  5. Wait for your invitation. It comes by email: about a week before the test at Alliance Française Vancouver and Alliance Française d’Edmonton. Ashton Testing Services asks you to write if you have nothing 5 days before.
  6. Bring the right ID. It varies: only a passport at Alliance Française Vancouver, two photo IDs at Alliance Française Calgary. Read your invitation.

What the TCF and TEF exams cost

Neither FEI nor CCI sets a fee: each centre does. Fees below are as each page showed them on 5 November 2026. “Not shown” means we did not find it on the page we read, not that the centre does not run the test. More on the TCF Canada fees and TEF Canada fees pages.

Test centres by province

All 50 centres are on FEI’s list for the TCF on 5 November 2026. The TEF column is ticked only where the centre’s own page says it runs the TEF Canada; a dash means we did not check, not that it does not. For the TEF, CCI’s search tool is the reference. FEI marks most of them as offering computer sessions; the University of Victoria says its tests are on paper, so check the format when you book. The links go to each centre’s own website; a few of FEI’s links no longer open, so we give the same organisation’s current site.

Cancellation and refunds: read the terms before you pay

  • Alliance Française Vancouver: any purchase is final, with no refund, credit, new date or transfer to someone else.
  • Ashton Testing Services: no refund, cancellation or transfer. A new date only with a medical certificate, if approved, for CA$150.
  • Alliance Française Calgary: no refund or deferral. It adds that rare technical issues can cancel a session at the last minute, and that it does not pay for travel or accommodation.
  • Alliance Française d’Edmonton: registration is final, with no refund, transfer or credit. If you arrive late or without the ID you registered with, you cannot sit the test and get no refund.
  • Université Concordia: all registrations are final and not refundable.
  • Alliance Française Toronto: no refund, but you can move your booking up to 15 days before the exam (30 for a paper TCF) for CA$100, and rebook within 6 months.
  • Alliance Française Ottawa (TEF): CA$100 is kept if you cancel or change the date before the registration deadline; after that, no refund and no change.
  • TEF Canada, according to CCI: registration is firm and final. For a serious reason (illness, work, death of a relative), you give the centre proof, and CCI may offer a new registration there at no extra cost. An unjustified absence is not refunded.

Retakes and results

You can take the TCF Canada as often as you like, 20 days apart according to FEI. CCI sets the same wait for the TEF Canada. Each attempt is a new booking with a new fee. FEI has also suspended re-marking of the writing and speaking tests for about a year from the sessions of 1 September 2026.

Results depend on the centre: 1 to 2 weeks at Alliance Française d’Edmonton (except December and August for the TCF), up to 4 weeks at Alliance Française Vancouver, within 6 weeks at Alliance Française Calgary. FEI says TCF results come 15 working days after it receives the material. More: TCF Canada results.

TCF and TEF exam booking: FAQ

How do I book the TCF Canada exam?

Directly with an approved test centre: France Éducation international (FEI) does not take bookings. Pick a centre on FEI’s list (50 in Canada on 5 November 2026), open its TCF page, and book when registration is open. Most centres we read take the booking and the payment online. You then get an invitation by email, usually about a week before the test.

How do I book the TEF Canada exam?

The same way: with a test centre, not with CCI Paris Île-de-France. CCI says each centre is your only contact for registration, your invitation and any cancellation. Find a centre with CCI’s search tool, or open the page of a centre listed below, then book during its registration period.

When does registration open for the TCF or TEF exam?

Each centre sets its own dates. FEI says TCF Canada sessions run all year, as each centre can organise them. On 5 November 2026 the pages we read showed very different patterns: about a week, two to four months before the test, at Alliance Française Vancouver; about two weeks at Alliance Française Victoria; often about an hour at Alliance Française d’Edmonton; fixed dates each quarter at Alliance Française Toronto. The seat calendar on this page lists what each centre has published. The Calgary and Edmonton centres say they do not answer questions about dates.

How much does the TCF or TEF exam cost in Canada?

At the centres that show a fee, on 5 November 2026: CA$390 to CA$420 for the TCF Canada and CA$390 for the full TEF Canada. Each centre sets its own fee, so check on the day you book. Some sell a listening and speaking version of the TEF for CA$195 to CA$240; Alliance Française Ottawa and Alliance Française Vancouver call it their citizenship version. Check on IRCC’s website which tests your application needs before you pay.

What if every session is sold out?

On 5 November 2026 most TCF sessions we saw were sold out, while some TEF sessions still had seats: see the seat calendar on this page. Look at other centres: Alliance Française Calgary says its exams are open to all candidates wherever they live, while Alliance Française Ottawa keeps its TEF for residents of Canada. Some centres have other routes: workshop participants at Alliance Française Vancouver may get priority access to selected seats, and the University of Victoria has a wish list that emails you when registration opens. Alliance Française Toronto and Ashton Testing Services have no waiting list; Toronto says spots sometimes open up, first come, first served.

Can I cancel or move my booking?

Usually not. Alliance Française Vancouver, Alliance Française Calgary, Alliance Française d’Edmonton and Concordia give no refund and allow no change. Ashton Testing Services gives no refund, and changes a date only with a medical certificate, if approved, for CA$150. Alliance Française Toronto gives no refund but lets you move your booking up to 15 days before the exam (30 for a paper TCF) for CA$100. For the TEF, CCI says registration is firm and final; with proof of a serious reason, it may offer a new registration at the centre. Read your centre’s terms before you pay.

How long must I wait between two attempts?

At least 20 days for the TCF Canada, according to FEI, and 20 days for the TEF Canada, according to CCI. Some centres ask for more: 30 days at Alliance Française du Manitoba for the TCF and at Alliance Française Ottawa for the TEF, 60 days at Alliance Française du Manitoba for the TEF. Each attempt is a new booking with a new fee.

Can you book the exam for me?

No. TCF Canada Coach is not a test centre and has no link with FEI, CCI, IRCC or the centres listed here. We make a practice tool for the writing and speaking tests. To book, go to your centre’s website.
