Estimated level · TCF Canada · Task 1

NCLC 6

CEFR B1 · Estimated score 8,5/20

Word count: 94 (60–120)

In TCF Canada, the score out of 20 covers all three tasks together: this is the score you would get if every task were at this level.

Overview

A clear message that covers the whole prompt (home, area, invitation). Sentences stay simple and side by side: to reach NCLC 7, enrich the description with relative clauses and vary your linking words.

Assessment criteria

  • Task completion 11/20
  • Coherence and cohesion 8/20
  • Vocabulary range and control 8/20
  • Grammatical accuracy 8/20
  • Spelling and punctuation 10/20
  • Sentence complexity 6.5/20
  • Register and appropriateness 9.5/20

Sentence-by-sentence corrections

  1. Agreement Important
    You wrote un nouveau appartement
    Correction un nouvel appartement

    Why: Before a masculine noun starting with a vowel or silent h, « nouveau » becomes « nouvel » (like « beau » → « bel »).

  2. Grammar Fix
    You wrote beaucoup des magasins
    Correction beaucoup de magasins

Why: After « beaucoup », use « de » with no article: « beaucoup de magasins ».

  3. Syntax Fix
    You wrote dites-moi avant jeudi
    Correction dites-le-moi avant jeudi

Why: « Dire » needs an object here: « dites-le-moi » (le = whether you can come).

  4. Register Style
You wrote Je vous écris pour vous dire que
    Correction Grande nouvelle :

Why: Between friends this formal letter opener sounds heavy. A direct opening is more natural.

Model answer on the same prompt

Bisous, Amina

TCF Canada writing: the essentials in 4 questions

How many words do you need to write?

Each task has its own limits: 60–120 words for task 1 (a message), 120–150 for task 2 (an article or letter) and 120–180 for task 3 (two opinions compared, then yours). A word is any group of signs between two spaces: « c’est-à-dire » counts as 1 word. A task outside the limits can get the whole paper rated “A1 not reached”; our counter follows the official rule.

How is the writing test scored?

The three texts, written in 60 minutes, get a single score out of 20. France Éducation international’s graders assess linguistic criteria (vocabulary, grammar, spelling), pragmatic criteria (coherence, development of ideas) and sociolinguistic criteria (fit to the situation). The score gives the CEFR level (B2 from 10 to 13, C1 from 14 to 17) and, with IRCC’s chart, the NCLC level. Our grader estimates each task separately, with the same criteria.

What writing score do you need for NCLC 7?

According to IRCC’s chart, NCLC 7 in writing is 10 or 11 out of 20 in TCF Canada (12–13 for NCLC 8, 14–15 for NCLC 9). In TEF Canada it is 428 to 471 out of 699. Always check your program’s requirements on IRCC’s website. See the full NCLC conversion chart.

What does a sample answer look like?

Here is a sample message for task 1, on an original prompt (“invite your colleagues to a farewell lunch”). The exam is in French, so the answer is too:

Bonjour à tous, Comme vous le savez peut-être, je quitte l’équipe à la fin du mois pour un nouveau poste à Québec. Avant mon départ, j’aimerais vous remercier autour d’un repas : je vous invite vendredi prochain, à midi, au restaurant Le Saint-Denis, juste en face du bureau. Le repas est offert ! Merci de me confirmer votre présence d’ici mercredi pour que je puisse réserver. À bientôt, Julie

It answers the prompt (what, when, where, what the readers should do), the register suits colleagues and it stays under 120 words. Each task page has a full sample answer with comments: task 1, task 2, task 3.

What the estimate is based on

The published official criteria

The grader applies the criteria described by France Éducation international for the TCF (linguistic, pragmatic, sociolinguistic) and by CCI Paris Île-de-France for the TEF, plus each task’s word-count rules.

IRCC’s NCLC chart

The estimated score is converted to an NCLC level with the chart published by IRCC (updated 16 October 2026). It is an estimate for practice: only the official bodies issue results.

Frequently asked questions

How can I get my TCF Canada writing corrected for free?

Paste your text into the grader above and pick the task. The free preview shows your estimated NCLC level and your 2 most important corrections. The full report (every correction, a score for each criterion and a model answer) is paid, from US$9.90 for 10 corrections.

Is the NCLC level official?

No. It is an estimate based on the criteria published by France Éducation international (TCF) and CCI Paris Île-de-France (TEF), and on IRCC’s conversion chart. Only those bodies issue official results. Above B2, the estimate is conservative.

Which tasks can I get corrected?

All three TCF Canada writing tasks (a 60–120-word message, a 120–150-word article, a 120–180-word comparison of two opinions) and both TEF Canada sections (continuing a news story, 80 words minimum; an opinion letter, 200 words minimum). For speaking, the three TCF Canada tasks and TEF Canada sections A and B: record your answer or type it; pronunciation is not assessed.

How long does a correction take?

Usually 20 to 60 seconds. The report stays in your account and you can print it or save it as a PDF.

Are the prompts real exam questions?

No. Every prompt is original and follows the official format (text type, recipient, word count). You can also paste the instructions of your own prompt.
